Main Challenges With Implementing HoP, Human Factors or Safety 2?

  • Mainstream safety education, like IOSH or OSHA certificates, don’t cover HoP, HF or Safety 2. This leaves a gap, even for those with advanced safety qualifications.
  • Overwhelming amount of  information on HoP, Safety 2 and Human Factors, that often is not practical.
  • Learning from books or theory alone is slow and lacks real-world application. Traditional education, like degrees, misses the mark too. They’re heavy on theory, and lack practical content that practitioners need. Plus, it’s not feasible to send large teams for such training.
  • Limits of training only one person – you need a group. If only one person develops expertise, they might return with great ideas, but other decision makers will have the same mindset resulting in push back. For real change, a group of key influencers and decision-makers need to be on the same page. This needs developing a community of internal experts to ensure they understand the advanced topics and can apply them in a coordinated manner.
  • Wouldn’t it be better to have a structured, practical framework to build internal experts to effectively deploy proactive learning  across your organization?
  • Wouldn’t it be more effective to be guided by an expert who has the decades of insight and learning required to form a successful implementation?

Introducing Learning from Normal Work Competency Pathway Which Includes:

    The Competency Pathway Offers:

    • a simple, structured framework to effectively learn about modern safety topics not currently available through mainstream safety education.
    • a comprehensive combination of knowledge and skills to transform how you think of safety while delivering significant risk reduction.

In Marcin’s Words – The Origins of the Pathway

“Around 2015, I was responsible for the global deployment of a human performance program at BP.

Part of my strategy was to develop HoP/HF-related knowledge and skills among more than 500 safety professionals located in various parts of the world.

I couldn’t find a simple, structured approach to do so. There were Masters degrees available in the UK and USA, as well as shorter residential courses, but they were either too time consuming, too theoretical or not cost-effective.

I needed something that would allow upskilling a large group of people without asking them to travel or undertake extensive study, while also being practical and flexible.

I envisioned and developed the Competency Pathway as the solution.

Over the years, I’ve trained hundreds of people, finding the strengths and limitations of the program.

I’ve received lots of feedback on what worked and what needed to be changed.

My new Competency Pathway, designed from ground up, is based on this feedback, with a refined structure and practical activities.

The Pathway is now streamlined to better enable participants to both shift their mindset and then apply it in practice to get meaningful risk reduction.”

A Pathway of 12 essential modules that focus on:

    1. Human performance: the things that influence what people do.
    2. Organizational performance: the processes and structures that create the constraints and error
      traps for workers.
    • 1. Foundational Concepts
    • 2. Questions and Resources
    • 3. Psychology of Design
    • 4. Error Prediction
    • 5. Decision Making
    • 6. Non-compliance Prediction
    • 7. Supervision, Leadership and Culture
    • 8. Risk Assessment
    • 9. Learning Teams
    • 10. Investigations
    • 11. Accountability and Restorative Justice
    • 12. Metrics and Strategy

The Competency Pathway combines the most effective aspects of HoP, Safety II, and Human Factors, plus a roadmap for practical implementation across your organisation.

It is based on multiple approaches such as:

    • Safety II
    • Human and Organisational Performance (HoP)
    • Human Performance Improvement (HPI)
    • Human Factors (HP) and Engineering Psychology
    • Resilience Engineering
    • Safety Differently
    • Systems Thinking
    • Cognitive Psychology

With a specific focus on tools that provide immediate insights and actionable steps, the Pathway cuts down the time of typically extensive self-guided learning process to a flexible cohort-based program.

    Upon completion, you’ll receive:

    • A certificate, signifying your expertise.
    • 11 distinct documents that help uncover insights and potential issues in your organization. These documents, which include checklists, prompts, and interview questions, are tools designed to proactively identify and rectify potential safety threats.
    • A new safety mindset - you will never see safety in the same way again.
    • Benefits for Individuals
    • A deep understanding of the psychology of safety in 12 different areas
    • 11 practical tools to apply in your practice
    • Skills to use these tools and get high quality insights into the context of work
    • Ability to integrate concepts and tools with existing processes, such as investigations, risk assessment, audits, behavioral observations
      • Benefits for Organizations
      • A key group of influencers is aligned on key concepts, they speak the same language and can support the implementation of your program. A community that can share what’s working / not working and continually improve
      • A community that becomes a bridge between the frontline operations/leadership and corporate teams
      • A community that can provide education, coaching and push back when needed if local leaders want to change the course
