ABB is a global technology company operating across more than 100 countries. Like many large organizations in high-risk industries, it recognized that compliance-focused safety had reached a plateau: incident numbers had leveled off, but the conditions shaping everyday work remained poorly understood. ABB began exploring Human and Organizational Performance in 2016, though early pilots lost momentum without sustained leadership commitment. The turning point came in 2022, when a senior leader watched oil and gas customers present measurable results from their own programs.
ABB formalized a set of principles designed to shift the organization from reactive safety management toward learning and resilience. Two initiatives supported the rollout: a multi-year Guiding Principles Awareness Training program and Lead With Care, a leadership development workshop focused on shifting from blame to learning.
Multiple leadership sessions brought together leaders from operations, HSE, engineering, and project management to build a shared understanding of what Learning from Normal Work means in practice. These sessions were designed to connect LFNW to the existing Guiding Principles and to build the sponsorship needed for practical rollout.
In late 2024, ABB appointed a dedicated Global HOP Manager and engaged Psychology Applied to deliver the Competency Pathway to its HSE team across divisions. The program is a structured 12-module course building the practical skills HSE specialists need to apply Learning from Normal Work in their day-to-day work. It now reaches ABB's HSE professionals across 48 countries, making it one of the largest structured LFNW capability-building efforts in any global organization.
ABB conducted a series of 2-3 day Site Activation programs in Egypt, China, Germany, and the USA, bringing the methodology to life in a regional setting. The pilot demonstrated that Learning from Normal Work can be adapted and delivered effectively across different cultural and operational contexts within ABB's global footprint.
ABB's journey with Learning from Normal Work is still underway. The approach has been to do fewer things well, build credibility through early wins, and scale from there.
