The four maturity levels
The practice has not started. Proactive learning may be understood in principle, but it is not visible in how the site plans, leads, or does its work.
The building blocks are working. Leadership is engaged, engagements happen in the field, the HSE team can facilitate proactive learning, the workforce recognizes error traps, and findings are tracked.
Proactive learning is part of how work gets done. First-line leaders own the practice, deeper learning has structure, and LFNW thinking is built into risk assessment, investigation, and how consequence decisions are made.
Proactive learning is part of how the site does business. It reaches beyond HSE into quality, reliability and maintenance, procedure management, contract management, and design and procurement.

Whether site leadership actively sets expectations for proactive learning, acts visibly on findings, and integrates LFNW into site planning.
Whether leaders use field engagement practices to do learning, not compliance checks.
Whether the HSE team has depth on proactive learning tools and whether they coach others, not only facilitate.
Whether frontline workers recognize error traps and, at higher maturity, are flagging them unprompted and co-facilitating learning sessions.
Whether what comes out of proactive learning gets actioned, tracked, and resourced, or evaporates after the conversation.
Whether first-line leaders hold learning conversations and weave LFNW into routine touchpoints.
Whether the site invests in deeper, cross-functional learning on high-risk activities.
Whether proactive learning has its own performance indicators and whether those indicators measure quality of insight, not only volume.
Whether risk assessments capture error traps, constraints, and the gap between planned and real work.

The standard describes it as a structured conversation supported by tangible evidence. It is not a regulatory compliance audit. The aim is a defensible read on where each area sits today and a clear view of what would move it up a level.
A typical assessment takes one to two days depending on the size of the site and how many people the assessor needs to talk to. All 15 areas are covered on every visit.
Yes, and we recommend it. Start with the online self-assessment, which scores the same 15 areas against the same four levels and takes about ten minutes. The full certification standard is then shared with your site before the formal visit, so your team can go deeper on the areas the self-assessment flagged.
That is a useful result, not a failed one. Emerging means the practice has not started in that area, and the report says what would move it to Established. Many sites run the assessment before they begin a deployment precisely to get that baseline.
The LFNW Culture Assessment Survey measures employee perceptions of leadership behavior. Site certification measures whether proactive learning is actually embedded in the site's systems and practices. Survey data gives you the "what workers feel" picture. Certification gives you the "what is actually happening" picture. Organizations that use both get the most complete view.
Yes. The standard is designed to be applied consistently across sites in different countries and industries. Enterprise clients typically certify sites individually and use the results for cross-site comparison and prioritization.
Assessments are conducted by certified LFNW assessors from Psychology Applied. The assessor has practical experience implementing Learning from Normal Work in complex organizations and is trained in the certification standard methodology.
